Common interest first

As part of its projects, SNH gives priority to options aiming at the development of areas where oil operations are conducted, both in terms of business and employment opportunities and infrastructure.

With regard to the infrastructure aspect, some of the achievements include the construction or rehabilitation of roads and the construction of boreholes to give the local population access to drinking water, particularly in Mvia (Edea) and Bipaga (Kribi).

Depending on available funds, the SNH grants donations and subsidies of a social nature, to the benefit, in particular, of socially disadvantaged people.

Caring for staff

Personnel is at the heart of SNH’ concerns. As such, the company ensures notably that they have adequate working conditions from the professional, health, safety and infrastructural standpoint.

On another level, the company contributes to the well-being of its staff through a Solidarity Fund and a sport and cultural association, which serve as a recreational and mutual assistance framework for workers and their families.

Continuous contribution to youth training

SNH supports the national education community through several actions. Thus, thanks to the "Excellence Award" operation, the Company contributes to improving the supply of textbooks and computer equipment in the libraries and multimedia centres of the best public secondary schools in the ten regions of Cameroon, according to the rankings of the Office du Baccalauréat du Cameroun and the GCE Board.

It also encourages deserving students from various parts of the country through awards ceremonies. The main beneficiaries are the pupils of schools located near operation sites or hosting oil infrastructures in the South-West, the Littoral, the South and the Far North regions.

Moreover, the company contributes to the professionalization of teaching in the oil industry. In this context, it has notably set up a computer laboratory for petroleum geosciences at the University of Douala, in partnership with oil services company Schlumberger.

SNH is conducting a project to extend this experience to other academic institutions. This involves the Departments dedicated to Earth Sciences at the Universities of Yaoundé I, Dschang, Buea and Bamenda, the Petromines Centre at the University of Douala, the Faculty of Mines and Petroleum Industries at the University of Maroua (based in Kaélé) and the School of Geology and Mining at the University of Ngaoundéré (based in Meïganga).

SNH works for the preservation of Cameroon’s cultural heritage and the development of art in Cameroon. In this context, it sponsors major local and international cultural events, including festivals organised by the indigenous people of Kribi (Mayi), the Bamoun (Nguon) and coastal people (Ngondo).

Biodiversity preservation, a priority for SNH

In fulfilling its missions, SNH ensures strict compliance with the legal provisions governing environmental protection. Therefore, all hydrocarbon exploration and production activities are subject to the completion of a prior environmental and social impact assessment, which presents in particular the incidence of such activities on the environment and mitigation measures envisaged to preserve the ecosystem balance.

The company also implements a National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP) through the Pipeline Steering and Monitoring Committee (CPSP).

SNH's commitment is also reflected in its involvement in international initiatives aimed at preserving ecosystems, such as the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC) and the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues (IPIECA).
